Have you ever surfed the Internet and wound up on a blog where they wrote about far away places and showed you amazing photographs? That’s Travel Blogging! You wondered, how do these people pull it off? How can they travel the world, enjoy their lives to the fullest and earn a living while doing it? And most importantly, can I do it too?
Travel Blogging Started Out Using Pen and Paper
Travel blogging is something that has been popular for centuries, only it has been known as travel writing. Back then, the opportunities for travel were much scarcer than today, and you had to buy a newspaper or a book to read about them. Much has changed since then. Today, traveling to a distant foreign country is no longer an unfulfillable longing, it is real, possible and not nearly as expensive as it used to be. For under $1000, you can go anywhere in the world you want to go, and once out there, you can go to a neighboring country for as little as $10! With the advent of cheap air travel, all of this has been made possible.
Still, many people do not have the time or money to travel where they would want to, and the next best thing is to read a travel blog. That is the main attraction: you get to experience a completely different world through the eyes of another person. With vivid pictures and captivating writing, it can feel as if they are really there, riding a camel at the Pyramids or standing in front of an ancient tree in a Temple of Angkor Wat.
Can I Do This?
But, the question still remains: can I do it and if so, how can I do it? To tell the truth, writing a travel blog is both very easy and hard at the same time. It is very easy to start and hard to excel at. The good news is that it is definitely possible to travel the world and make a living doing it. There are plenty of people who were just like you a few years ago and now they run a successful blog and travel around the world. The only thing between you and your dream job is ‘starting’! Anyone can do it. But, enough about that …
Let’s talk about how to actually start Travel Blogging
First of all, you need a website. The easiest option is to start a WordPress website that will be your blog. Using a free domain is possible, but then you will drown in a flood of other blogs. You want to stand out from the beginning to have the best chance. Choose a name that is unique and intrigues the potential reader enough to make them click on your blog. It should be short, memorable and it does not have to have ‘travel blogging’ in the name.
Then, you need to start posting. Even if you are not traveling at the moment, I bet that there is a fair amount of people who would be interested in you and your hometown or country. You might find out that you have plenty to write without even traveling anywhere! Once you start gaining momentum with your blog, you can expand your area of interest further and further. You can post about your travels if are traveling already, (also, your previous travels are a great source). You can write about your passion for travel, about the 11 best meals you had in India, or whatever is interesting to you. Interesting to you means you will write about it well, which means that the readers will be infused with your enthusiasm and will be very likely to check you out again and maybe even share your work with their friends.
The Hard Part of Travel Blogging
“Hard” as in something new you have to learn. Have you ever heard of SEO? Social media sharing strategies? Well, you will need to learn about these things. You see, there are a lot of people like you, who would like to start a blog about travel. To make sure you get noticed, you need to master these skills. Don’t worry, they are not as hard as they may sound, and there are lots of tutorials on the Internet on how to do them. These are the nitty-gritty, behind-the-scenes things that play a major role in your success while travel blogging. Learn them, live them, and you will be well on your way to being a proud owner of a successful travel blog.
What is the most important part of being a travel blogger? It is, without a shade of doubt, your audience. Without an audience, you won’t attract sponsors. You need to grow and nurture your audience like you would a flower: take great care of it. The number one way to keep a reader is useful and entertaining content. Research what people like to read about and what they are curious about. If you can answer a frequently asked question or provide your audience with a solution to a problem, you will impress them and make it clear to them that you are of value to them.
Keep Them Coming Back For More
There are many more things you need to keep in mind with your travel blogging, like making your content interesting, having guest posts, being on top of your social media, and so on. But these are all things that you will learn how to do as you go along. Trying to be perfect from the beginning is dooming yourself to failure, because no one is perfect, not even those who have been doing for the longest time. Even they are still learning new things. Instead of striving for perfection, strive for consistency. If you set a goal of publishing 3 articles a week, do so, no matter what. Consistency over the long term is what will build you your audience and quality content will keep them coming. That is the base, everything else is like the icing on the cake (admittedly, this cake has rather a lot of icing).
With that said, go, get out there and start travel blogging!
